And I have been living out here away from my city for over a year now. I am happy to say that MANY wonderful new and exciting advancements have been made BECAUSE I moved. It hasn't always been easy and I desperately miss NYC - but I know I am exactly where I need to be right now. Thank you again for connecting wi...Hello PaulBlog1!
Thank you again for connecting with one of my more personal posts. I agree -- this is NOT an issue solely for women and I am sorry to have generalized like that. I will say that - on the whole - women are held to a MUCH more stringent standard as far as weight is concerned (and age - for that matter). That's just how it is. I am not saying that men aren't also ridiculed by the general population for being overweight. Our society is highly cruel to all overweight individuals be they men or women. Mainstream media portrays a myriad of overweight men with tiny hot bodied women all the time though -- hammering away the notion that men can let themselves go but women - not so much. I definitely agree though -- at the heart of it all -- our own idea of what we look like can be VASTLY different than what everyone else sees and this can happen to men or women. We all have tremendous body issues and it is really quite unnatural yet it is so common. I do think our society has created this and I also believe it is slightly more of a problem for women based on society's standards. How sad that you all could not convince your mother of how beautiful she truly was. That breaks my heart and inspires me to stay out of my paranoid mind which - unfortunately has the world's most unflattering funhouse mirror inside it. I have to consciously choose to hear and believe those voices outside myself who so strongly disagree!JMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06213398327481660682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4758366808296271507.post-61790339659051436512014-05-01T22:48:03.543-07:002014-05-01T22:48:03.543-07:00Thank you so much PaulBlog1! I really appreciate ...Thank you so much PaulBlog1! I really appreciate your visiting my blog and blowing off some of the cobwebs! First off -- I can't recall specifically selecting a picture of Honey Boo Boo and right now I honestly can't remember if I did that on purpose or not! Usually I would remember doing something like that!!! I don't really think it's possible for the image to have changed since then but who knows? Honestly - I think I'll leave it because it makes me giggle and not take the post too seriously --- which I hope no one does. I am just honored someone was reading it!!

Now - as far as Les Miserables goes. If you ever feel like indulging in the story and don't wish to read the book (I never have) - find yourself a theatrical production of it -- preferably professional -- on Broadway or a touring production. It really is an incredible show. The music is fantastic and it really is an epic piece of theatre that should not be missed.

The most recently released movie version of this (with Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, & Anne Hathaway) is what I was not too happy with. I can't speak for the other movie version I believe exists -- which, to my knowledge, is NOT a musical. It may be wonderful.

For me-- musical theatre has always been my passion and it started by watching movie musicals in my family. That is why they mean so much to me and why I was so disappointed by this one. It truly doesn't do the live piece ANY justice and I highly recommend you do yourself a favor and enjoy that one day if the opportunity presents itself. Thank you again for contributing your thoughts!!JMhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06213398327481660682noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4758366808296271507.post-40626868067601722522014-04-11T23:54:41.871-07:002014-04-11T23:54:41.871-07:00Loving ourselves as we are right now is often very...Loving ourselves as we are right now is often very difficult for both genders. The world we live in provides much opportunity for conflict within and between us. Body image trouble is not exclusive to women but seems to be particularly pervasive and persistent for them. I didn't have a name for it but when I was a child I realized that my mother had no real concept of how she looked. When they were married both of my parents looked very good. My mother could have been a model as they are now were she less conservative and modest. Despite what many told her then and since she has always felt that she was ugly and no one has been able to convince her otherwise even when looking at photos of her in younger times she's convinced that she was hideous. Many times we were going places in the car and she would see a woman walking along that, I think, was well over 100 pounds heavier than my mother, yet mom would ask if that's what she looked like. We would all try to convince her that she wasn't in the same ball park with the woman she'd pointed to but she couldn't hear it. We even tried to show her women who more closely compared to her but she couldn't believe that either. This is in the '60s and '70s before super thin models were everywhere.

All of that to say, you're far from alone. This has been going on a long time and seems to have a way to go still. It's good that you found a role that gave you cause to be glad of your physical features despite the internal conflict you dealt with on that very subject. Keep moving in the right direction and hopefully you'll reach a point that mirrors are not dreaded for you and you'll be able to hear the voices of those who already accept you for who you are right now.PaulBlog1https://www.blogger.com/profile/08509227644915307707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4758366808296271507.post-19922514856400602022014-04-11T23:32:12.365-07:002014-04-11T23:32:12.365-07:00Glad you found someone to share your life with. Spell check didn't flag it or interfere so maybe it came out ok.) all of the following was regarding your post and this movie. I can't tolerate Honey Bo Bo for more than a few seconds at a time on TV much less a whole movie on that insanity.PaulBlog1https://www.blogger.com/profile/08509227644915307707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4758366808296271507.post-10405926738378930752014-04-11T17:11:38.234-07:002014-04-11T17:11:38.234-07:00I don't know if you control this or not but at...I don't know if you control this or not but at the top of this post is a photo for Honey Bo Bo. But that was never mentioned in the post at all. I'm glad you have the background and sensitivity to recognize what's going on in that movie. I generally stay pretty close to the surface and recognize very few of the people involved, much less am able to gauge whether a particular performance was their best work or not, or what aspects were the cast or who else affected the end result. With you there to see it, reservations and all, at least a few people had someone qualified to recognize that they had done well under rather poor circumstances. When the movie was announced I downloaded it a couple of times in different apps on my tablet. There was NEVER a chance that I was going to see the movie in a theater but maybe I'd manage to read the book one of these days and then watch one of the movies that were better done than this one was. I'd welcome any suggestions you care to give on the matter. Regardless, it's a mid to long term thing for me right now and may never happen at all unless my life takes a turn in a totally unexpected direction. Nonetheless I really enjoyed your analysis, keeping me from making this production possibly the only time I ever see the movie at all, and the depth of your commitment to this art form. ALL of my commitments are in other areas but these days there are far too many people with little or no commitment to anything at all.PaulBlog1https://www.blogger.com/profile/08509227644915307707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4758366808296271507.post-27124080946144354232014-04-11T16:52:04.753-07:002014-04-11T16:52:04.753-07:00I've never understood why some ladies focus so...I've never understood why some ladies focus so much attention on their nails or what goes into color selection, patterns, products, and all the rest of that mindset. i hear what you are sayin...dear baby arms mama...

i hear what you are saying loud and clear and also know this to be true in the community.. i think NY State validating our relationships is a game changer.

i've heard friends say "i wonder if i'm the marrying type?" and i've witnessed couples breaking up as NY got closer and closer to making same-sex marriage legal because those couples all of sudden realized they wouldn't want to marry their current significant other.

not everyone wants to get married.. i mean what's a piece of paper anyways? for those that don't want to marry - good for you i agree.. for those people that have families, children, sick partners or other things where the legal world comes into play.. congratulations.. the state now recognizes you!!! (insert tearing up here)

so i came out around.. 1993ish maybe.. and since then.. i've picked girls up at the gay bar.. gay bar.. gggg.. gay bar.. (see link for reference - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tw7EJ_mTmdM)
where else was i supposed to go to hookup? since then i've heard various friends complain that the bars were the only place where you could find another gay (softball too hehe) .. i think this is where the culture was pushed.. we were pushed into the corner.. into the corner gay bars.. where we could dance and kiss and grind.. people hooked up.. maybe they stayed together for decades maybe they had kids.. but mostly from my experience.. it was kind of a party scene.. and i never imagined i would think of getting married or that my friends that had been together for decades would get married.. wha? marriage? same sex marriage?

my thoughts are a lot sporadic.. hard to even wrap my head around the right that has been given to me.. i think that the parade will morph into a higher level of gay culture, a reason to be proud and to remember all of the people that are not here to experience this event.. the friends and family that were beat to death or raped.. the gay couples that lost children, houses, everything after their partner left or passed away.. the huge number of people that couldn't visit their partners while suffereing from AIDS .. these people.. the ones that didn't have the freedom i have.. these people should be thought of and honored at each parade everywhere around the world..

the change has already started.. this year at the parade.. did anyone notice what the press covered? does anyone remember an image in a paper showing the most fantastic and outrageous drag queen or other fabulous extremes? i can't remember seeing any.. this year the papers covered the parade.. and they showed pictures of you and me and families..

we all breathe the same air.. i'm happy to see the NY State Senate agrees.. it's about time..Tami Johnsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11367539923543071531noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4758366808296271507.post-30101808474067532142011-06-28T19:31:13.714-07:002011-06-28T19:31:13.714-07:00p.s. - I NEED to see The Normal Heart before it cl...p.s. - I NEED to see The Normal Heart before it closes! Being a theater geek, I knew too many (I'm dating myself here) who died at 21, 24. I still have a friend who's somehow survived from 1990 infection.

But everyone today, w/the meds and such, continues the "party must go on" mentality while not addressing the real issues or even caring to take care of themselves or their fellow participants. I saw "Normal Heart" and it brought it all back to me so vividly and sadly. The people I knew one day and who were gone the next. I worked at a hospital as a supervisor and one of my floors was the AIDS floor. I'd see people come in, leave, come in worse, leave - they'd say they'd be the first to beat it - then come back and die. It's why I had to leave that job.

And the people like the ones in the article you cited had no idea because it's not popular to educate kids about HIV/AIDS (or birth control or condoms or any practical truth in life) and the abhorrent treatment it got for the first 8 years of it's existence. And they perpetuate the myth that it's somehow manageable illness when, in the end, if it doesn't kill you, drug effects or things the drugs can't handle, will. And Ronnie Reagan was a "hero," after all. Revisionist history keeps all that truth from being known or exposed. It's sad. I'm glad some of those kids are seeing/understanding part of their history. And at the same time, there will always be those in ALL cultures who will live the "lah-lah, lah-lah-lah, let's live for today" mentality and can't be bothered with anything real. Chosen ignorance, chosen "bliss." The people who watch reality TV and never the news...
